    Medical and Health Humanities Colloquium

Thursday, November 12, 2020 at 5:00 PM until 6:30 PMEastern Standard Time UTC -05:00

The Medical and Health Humanities invites you to join us as we explore the work of two of our doctoral students: Roxana Delbene (Narrative Reportability and Credibility in Narratives of Contested Illness) and Krystyna Gustelle (Health, Healing, and Medical Pluralism in 19th-Century America). Responses will be given by Drew faculty members and students.

    Part A: Roxana Delbene
on Narrative Reportability and Credibility in Narratives of Contested Illness. Before discovering the field of medical humanities, Roxana studied linguistics at the University of Pittsburgh. Her dissertation examined verbal interactions between physicians and HIV/AIDS patients. The ethnographic work she did at a public hospital in Montevideo, Uruguay, awakened her interest in narratives and the interconnections between medicine and the humanities. She completed a MS in Narrative Medicine from Columbia University and then came to Drew University to pursue a DMH.

Richard Morehouse, emeritus professor of psychology at Viterbo University (Wisconsin) will respond to Roxana’s talk.

Part B: Krystyna Gustelle takes us along her doctoral journey on Medical Pluralism in 19th Century America - and its meaning for today’s challenges. Krystyna had a 35 year career in pharmaceutical industry with Johnson & Johnson, Astra Zeneca, Pfizer and GlaxoSmithKline. She was responsible for global communications for new oncology drugs, managed communication strategies for FDA approval of new medicines for breast cancer, kidney cancer, melanoma and colorectal cancer, and is a past President and current Chair Emeritus of Healthcare Business Women Association (HBA).

Nancy Gross, Humanities Educator and Ethics Consultant at Overlook Medical Center (our affiliated partner), and an alumna of our program, responds to Krystyna’s talk.

There are no preparatory readings, just join us with a curious and wondrous mind!
